Lighting Glossary

Technical terms explained clearly

Dictionary of professional LED lighting technical terms. Clear definitions of concepts like CRI, UGR, color temperature, lumens and more.

Installation

Plug-and-Play
Systems designed for immediate installation without special tools or advanced technical knowledge. In lighting, refers to equipment that only needs to be plugged in and positioned to work.

LED Technology

LED Binning
Process of classifying LED chips by their color and performance characteristics. Strict binning ensures color uniformity between different luminaires from the same batch. We select LEDs with MacAdam Step 3 binning for maximum consistency.
LED Driver
Power supply that converts alternating current (220V AC) to regulated direct current to power LEDs. Quality drivers allow dimming and determine system lifespan. Can be integrated or external.
Retrofit
LED lamp designed to directly replace traditional light sources (halogen, incandescent) using the same socket and power. Allows upgrading existing installations without changing the fixtures.

Light Characteristics

Beam Angle
Measured in degrees (°), defines the width of the emitted light beam. Narrow angles (15-24°) concentrate light to accent objects. Medium angles (36-40°) for general lighting. Wide angles (60°+) to evenly wash surfaces.
Color Temperature
Measured in Kelvin (K), indicates the tone of light emitted. Warm light (2700-3000K) has yellowish tones, ideal for cozy environments. Neutral light (4000K) reproduces natural colors. Cool light (5000-6500K) has bluish tones, suitable for work spaces.
CRI (Color Rendering Index)
A scale from 0 to 100 measuring a light source's ability to faithfully reproduce object colors. CRI>90 is considered excellent and is required for professional photography, fashion retail and art exhibition.
UGR (Unified Glare Rating)
Standardized index measuring the disturbing glare of a luminaire. UGR<19 is suitable for offices and screen work. UGR<16 for precision tasks. UGR<10 for very high visual demand spaces like operating rooms or photo studios.

Logistics

Flight Case
Professional transport case reinforced with metal corners and custom interior foam. Protects lighting equipment during transport and storage. All our rental equipment is delivered in flight cases.

Measurement Units

Lumen (lm)
Unit measuring total luminous flux emitted by a light source. Indicates the amount of visible light a luminaire produces. Higher lumens mean more light. A 10W LED spotlight typically produces 800-1000 lumens.
Lux (lx)
Unit measuring illuminance, the amount of light reaching a surface. 1 lux = 1 lumen per square meter. An office requires 500 lux, a trade show booth 750-1000 lux, and a photo studio may need over 1500 lux.

Optics

Diffuser
Optical element that softens and disperses the light beam, eliminating harsh shadows and reducing glare. Can be opal polycarbonate, prismatic or microstructured depending on the desired effect.

Protection

IP (Ingress Protection)
Two-digit code indicating protection against solids (first digit, 0-6) and liquids (second digit, 0-9). IP20 is for dry interiors. IP44 resists splashes. IP65 is suitable for outdoor use with rain. IP67 can be temporarily submerged.

Systems

Magnetic System
Lighting with spotlights that attach via neodymium magnets to a metal profile, allowing position changes in seconds without tools. Ideal for spaces requiring flexibility and frequent changes.
Track Light
A lighting system with electrified rails (three-phase tracks) that allows installing, moving and aiming lights without fixed installation. Projectors connect via adapters that slide along the rail, enabling instant repositioning.
